Master WAPE ( Water, Air, Pollution and Energy )

The WAPE program is organised by ENSTA Paris and École polytechnique, jointly with Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC), École Normale Supérieure and École des Ponts ParisTech, as the international track of the Master OACOS.

The WAPE master focuses on the physics and dynamics of the Ocean and atmosphere at the regional scales and the mesoscales, in the perspective of the environmental applications such as air quality monitoring, coastal management, ... Other specialities more focused on global climate or remote sensing are proposed within the Master OACOS.

ENSTA Paris is more specifically in charge of the marine component in WAPE. All the courses dedicated to ocean dynamics and marine applications are jointly organized by ENSTA Paris and Laboratoire d'Océanographie et du Climat (LOCEAN).

The strong points of the training program

  • Fundamental on general circulation: Energetic of the Atmosphere and Ocean, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, Ocean circulation.

  • Regional Dynamics and Meso Scale Processes: Students can focus either on the Ocean or Atmosphere dynamics.

  • Methodology: Numerical modelling, data assimilation, advanced statistics, ....

  • Practical Training: For students interested in marine sciences, this includes courses taught during an oceanographic cruise.

  • A large number of elective courses.

Cost of training

The cost includes participation in the courses, documentation, use of computers and other activities. Full or partial tuition fee waivers and scholarships are awarded to outstanding students.

  • Annual registration fee: around 250 €

  • Tuition fees: 6 000 €

The program is open to highly qualified students with a strong background in Physics or Fluid Mechanics and in Applied Mathematics. Direct admission into the second year M2 is open for students who already hold a minimum number of 60 ECTS in the field of interest, at graduate level. This includes: "Bac + 4" or "Bac + 5" engineers in the French system or similar educational systems, partial or full MSc degree, ...

Application procedure

Prospective candidates for the program should submit their application following the procedure described here. Admission of the students is based on the evaluation of academic transcripts, statement of purpose and letters of recommendation. Would you have any problem with the application procedure, please contact the program directors.

Final registration will be at ENSTA Paris or Ecole Polytechnique depending on the scientific orientation of the student and the fellowships or fee waivers obtained.
